A VanderHoeven Christmas

It is tradition in our extended family to spend Christmas Eve together. We are usually at the Lutz home in Redmond, as we were again this year. It is pretty fun to squeeze around 30 people into Karen and Bob's living room.

Karen always plans the menu with LOTS of good food (in our family nobody is ever in danger of starvation). Jacki and Tijs are here making a delicious punch.

We always have a program complete with Opa reading the Christmas story from Luke. Terrence read the Book of Mormon account of the birth of Christ. Pam read us a very cute story about a family a Christmas time.

This year for Christmas, we asked the family to write notes to Daniel our new missionary that is in the MTC.

The closing part of our program is always the singing of Silent Night is all of the languages we know. This year we had English, Dutch, German, Spanish and Albanian (Landi wasn't too sure how it goes but since he is from Albania we had to try). It is always a very touching part of the evening and I have a hard time not tearing up during especially the Dutch part.

Then we total loose control and move into the "White Elephant" gift exchange. It is fun every year to come up with some really crazy gifts. We have had a fruit cake (the same one) going around the family for 10 years now. Whoever gets it signs and dates the bottom of the can and passes it on the next year. It is so fun..of course the little ones didn't quite get why we were stealing their presents and why such a pretty wrapped present held such a crummy gift. Christmas Eve is always a great way to start our Christmas celebration.
